    Moses

Stonemasons were craftsmen who specialised in working with natural stone for building and decorative purposes, commissioned by wealthy citizens, merchants or religious institutions. They introduce the scene of Moses.

Abraham led his people to a new land. The Jewish people are oppressed by those in power. Moses is given the task of freeing his people from slavery. The journey is long, and the people fall back into worshipping other gods. Moses then shows them how to live according to the law of the Covenant.

    King David

Minstrels were itinerant or urban musicians and entertainers. They provided music and entertainment on all manner of occasions, from folk festivals to court ceremonies. They are presenting this scene.

The Jewish people are given a king of stature. He defeats the giant Goliath. Thus he symbolises the saviour, the Messiah who will be born of his descendants. Returning from battle, David is welcomed with a dance of joy.

    Prophets

The scene is presented by the Carmelite Fathers because they consider prophet Elijah as their founder.

Throughout history, people arise who want to remind us of our most fundamental mission in life: to be open to the life-giving force of God, to be the creator of peace by living in accordance with God’s will. We call them prophets.

    Rorate

The scene is presented by the guild of tailors because the warp and the woof are symbolic for the interweaving of time and eternity in the coming of Jesus Christ.

The ‘Rorate’ is a supplication of man for light upon his existence, for meaning in an apparent senselessness.
