Holy Sepulchre
Milan, the capital of Lombardy, preserves the relics of the Holy Sepulcher. The Nation of Lombardy presents this scene.
In front of the statue of the Holy Sepulchre (1702) out of the chapel of Jerusalem, accompanied by grieving women with rattles, walks Joseph of Arimathea, who carries the chalice in which, according to the legend, the blood of Christ was caught.
Arms of Christ
The Arms of Christ refer to the objects used during Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion. They are regarded as symbols of his sacrifice. The instruments of the Passion are depicted on banners.
Resurrection
The chamber of rhetoric of the Three Saints presents this scene, because it has three saints in its coat of arms: Barbara, Catherine and Mary Magdalen, the chief witness of the Resurrection.
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central point of doctrine for the Christians. Jesus is in a new and vital way near to everyone who turns to Him, in life and in prayer. In order to celebrate this resurrection, Christians come together around the last supper, the Eucharist. First, nobody recognises Him. Mary Magdalen thought Jesus was the gardener, until He called her by her name. Then we see the disconsolate Apostles. Suddenly they recognise Jesus. From then on, the Apostles proclaim, clothed in priest’s garments: ‘Peace be with you!’
